Yes, in exceptional cases grid balancing can temporarily increase your monthly peak. This is a deliberate choice by the FlexiO algorithm.
Why this happens:
- FlexiO makes an economic trade-off between all revenue streams
- The value of grid balancing at that moment can be higher than the extra costs of a higher monthly peak
- FlexiO looks at the total picture, not just the capacity tariff
Real-world example:
- Monthly peak rises from 2500W to 3131W = ~€2.40 extra costs
- The grid balancing earnings at that moment were higher than €2.40
- Net benefit for the user
Important:
At the end of the year, all invoiced monthly peaks are added together and divided by 12. This may result in a lower effective monthly peak, resulting in lower costs incurred when FlexiO increased the monthly peak.
Tip:
Always evaluate FlexiO's performance over a longer term (monthly/yearly), not based on a snapshot.
