More than a snapshot: the full story behind smart steering

This is some text inside of a div block.

FlexiO smartly optimizes your energy over the long term. Why snapshots in the app can be misleading, read here.

Many FlexiO users enthusiastically track their energy consumption and battery status through our app. It's great to see how aware and engaged our users are! Sometimes what you see raises questions, for example, "Why does my battery provide power while the price is low?" or "Why doesn't my battery charge right away while the sun is shining?"

This is quite understandable, because energy management today is smarter and more dynamic than ever. FlexiO doesn't just look at the here and now. The system makes choices with long-term benefits in mind.

In this blog, we explain how real-time data is just a snapshot in time. Instead, we look at how FlexiO ensures optimal performance over the entire day or week, so you get maximum benefit from smart energy control.

How does FlexiO steering actually work?

FlexiO continuously makes decisions based on a wide range of data:

  • Current energy market: they fluctuate continuously.
  • Weather forecasting: crucial for predicting solar production.
  • Consumption profile: depending on your behavior and consumption peaks.
  • Status of your installation: power, battery capacity, wear costs, energy losses, etc.
  • Net balancing: contributing to net balancing generates revenue, but are they interesting enough for you at this particular time?

So FlexiO does not just choose the cheapest power at the moment, but makes a smart trade-off: how do we get the maximum return over the entire day or week?

Why real-time data can be misleading

The app shows what's happening now: a live view of energy flows. But energy optimization is not always intuitive in the short term. That's why some decisions seem illogical, such as:

  • The battery provides power to the grid while prices are low.
  • The battery does not fully charge during sunlight hours.
  • Power is drawn from the grid while the battery still has charge.

At such a time, it is tempting to think that something is going wrong. But appearances are deceptive: FlexiO takes into account what's ahead.

For example, it may be smarter to keep battery capacity free for later, more expensive hours. In addition, discharging the battery can be part of a grid stabilization job for which you, the customer, receive a fee.

Smart choices over the longer term

An EMS+ is built for long-term optimization: the goal is to reduce your energy costs structurally, not necessarily to control every moment perfectly.

Sometimes that means making choices that seem less logical at that particular moment, but over the day or week lead to lower overall costs. You, your system and your portfolio always come first.

Tips for users

To get a good understanding of what FlexiO does for you:

  1. Look at your energy consumption and costs over longer periods of time, not just a live moment.
  2. Check periodic reports in the app , which better show how the system is performing.
  3. Don't just compare to "how it used to be": dynamic pricing, capacity pricing and lower injection fees have changed the energy market.
